This is because no matter who tells you otherwise, a major software update adds some risk. This is why I've got multiple backups: locally with a hard drive that backs up via Time Machine, and in the cloud with Backblaze, one of the best cloud backup services available today. There is no step more crucial to a proper major version update than making sure your data is duplicated. I've got the 2012 MacBook Pro, the first with a Retina Display, and this is the first major update that it won't get. I wanted iTunes back mostly as a way to manage my music library and to use as a player, as I can use Apple's default 'Music' software to manage my iPhone, so for this use case, having an install of iTunes that is slightly buggy with some error codes I have to dismiss is no big deal.My least favorite aspect of Big Sur is that my personal MacBook Pro does not support it. The iTunes store doesn't work for downloading music, but it will still (at least from what I've found in my case) download Podcasts for some reason. You'll get error messages when using iTunes (like error code 50, 42408, and 9039 among some others) and you just have to press okay until the popups go away. After I re-enabled it I tried starting iTunes again and it would 'quit unexpectedly', but as soon as I went back and disabled it again, iTunes started up again no problem.
The key and trick is that you have to disable CSUtil in the Startup options (like Retroactive tells you to do), and after you restart your MacBook and try to install it again through Retroactive, keep it disabled and don't re-enable it. I can confirm that the latest version of iTunes DOES work on M1 MacBooks, I just installed it. I have an M1 MacBook Pro 14", currently running Mac OSx Monterey.
